The construction of shade structures in coastal areas presents its own set of challenges. The presence of salt in the atmosphere, combined with moisture and wind add to the stresses experienced by materials used in shade structures. It is important for councils and builders to use the right materials at the beginning of a project to ensure safety, longevity, and low maintenance costs.
SPF Shades & Sails has recently completed a playground sail shade installation at Ross Park in Lennox Head for Ballina Shire Council. The installation was designed to provide improved sun shading in a busy public area. Miami Stainless provided a selection of 316 grade stainless steel hardware for use in the shade structure.
Sail Shade for Playground – Increasing Sun Protection
Ross Park is a highly utilised facility for the local community, and as a family-friendly destination, the provision of adequate shade cover is a critical factor. The new structure not only assists in the prevention of exposure to damaging UV rays, it also assists the council in the prevention of long-term sun damage to surrounding playground equipment and surface areas, which is a critical factor for council-managed outdoor facilities.
In addition to the functionality of the product, the design also had to complement the existing park surroundings. A simple, unobtrusive appearance was matched with the strength and durability necessary for a high utilisation facility, as well as the ability to withstand the elements. As the facility is situated at Lennox Head, a coastal town, corrosion resistance was a non-negotiable factor.
Stainless Steel Hardware: A Choice for Coastal Use
To satisfy these requirements, Miami Stainless provided marine-grade 316 stainless steel hardware that was chosen for its suitability for use in outdoor and coastal environments. The hardware kit consisted of the following:
Forged Bow Anchor Shackles, suitable for providing reliable load-bearing points for tensioned components
Medium Link Chain, designed to provide robust connections suitable for use in harsh outdoor and coastal environments
Designed for Longevity and Low Maintenance
The 316 grade stainless steel used in the structure is well known for its excellent resistance to corrosion, rust, and pitting, especially in a marine environment. In the context of a shade structure, this means that the structure will be stronger, require less maintenance, and be more reliable.
Using marine-grade stainless steel fittings in the structure, the Ross Park shade structure is designed to withstand the test of time, even in harsh outdoor conditions.
A Durable, Functional Result for the Community
With the construction complete, the result now provides effective shade for users of the park, enhances comfort in the area, and meets Ballina Shire Council’s asset management objectives. The finished result has achieved a durable, functional outcome.

When new client Adrian required a seamless balustrade system for his stunning new deck at Paradise Waters, there was one thing on his mind: preserving the view of the Gold Coast and his yacht. Miami Stainless worked with Adrian to create a solution that would preserve the scenery and enhance the beauty of the deck.
Adrian’s wish was a streamlined balustrade system with a reduced profile so his mirror round posts and mirror handrails wouldn’t obstruct his fantastic view of the water. To meet his needs, we provided a design with Custom RHS with Custom Tops to combine functionality and looks.
The end result was a beautiful balustrade system with integrated posts and handrails, perfect for Adrian’s deck. Pleased with the outcome, Adrian was so impressed that he decided to push it further by purchasing a staircase section to complete his deck, which elevated the elegance of the space even more.
Adrian’s project reflects Miami Stainless’ ability to create unique balustrade systems that are aesthetically appealing, functional and seamlessly integrated into the surroundings.
